Course Description

This class will study the last two Makot (Plagues) - that of Choshech (Darkness) and Bechorot (Killing of the Firstborn) - with the commentaries of Rashi, Ibn - Ezra, Ramban and further Rishonim (medieval commentaries).   We will examine the aspects of Teshuva contained within these two plagues, and how it can applied to our avoda around Elul and the Yamim Noraim. Skills in exegesis (critical interpretation of different approaches to Pshat - the simple interpretation of the text) will be developed and students will learn to decipher the limits to determining Pshat.   Additional references will include Achronim (latter commentaries), Netziv, Meshech Chochmah, and others.

Rabbi Yedidya Rausman is the founding director of WebYeshiva. Hailing from New York, he received his bachelor's degree at CUNY Queens College and his rabbinical ordination from Yeshivat Hamivtar and Rav Zalman Nechamia Goldberg. Former Director of Yeshivat Hamivtar, Rabbi Rausman has experience in various business ventures as well as in the non-profit sector. He currently resides in Neve Daniel with his wife, Nechama and three daughters.
