Course Description

This class will study Sefer Shmuel Bet (The Book of Samuel II), with relevant commentaries. Students will learn to think about the text themselves, and what the narratives mean, as well as hone their skills in exegesis. Where relevant we will take a more b'iyun (in depth) approach to some of the subjects, looking at a broader range of sources including Talmud, Rishonim and Achronim.

Sefer Shmuel Bet 11-12 David and Batsheva

Dear all

I am excited to finish learning the David and Batsheva story with several of the gemaras. We will conclude with a class discussion of the implications of Davids actions, and whether he was truly guilt free or not.

Looking forward!

We have also scheduled a make up shiur for 8pm the Monday after Tisha b'Av the 30th of July

Sefer Shmuel Bet 11-12 David and Batsheva

Dear all

We started to really process the story of David and Batsheva. What do the pasukim imply? What do the mefarshim say? Why do we seem to forget the 12th perek and the mussar of Natan when discussing the 11th perek? Great discussions by everyone and a great deal of fun this evening. Please God we will finish the 12th perek next week and go over the whole story with the gemaras and see if we can come to any concluding thoughts.

Please feel free to look at the attached sources.

Looking forward!

Sefer Shmuel Bet perek 7-8

Dear all

We finished the 7th perek. With the help of the 8th perek seem to have reached a better understanding of why David was not allowed to build the Beit HaMikdash. We are no closer to understanding where Natan came from, and why none of the mefarshim seem to help.

We moved on to the 8th perek and began to read about all of David's conquests.

Sefer Shmuel Bet perek 7

Dear students

We had a great discussion as we learned 1-17 of Shmuel Bet perek 7. We now understand why David thought he should build the Beit HaMikdash, and we have one reason (based on Chronicles 22) for why he wasn't allowed to.

Homework/Learning for Shavuot:

1) Where did Natan come from?! Why is such an important Navi given no intro at all, in a sefer that perhaps more than any other gives us background on the main characters?

2) If we accept David could not build the Beit Hamikdash because he was steeped in blood (and there are those that give other reasons) why would that be a problem? Especially if he was just doing the will of God and defending Eretz Israel?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts!!!

Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach!

Sefer Shmuel Bet review

Dear students

This shiur was dedicated to the memory of Yosef Hirsch z"l

After a brief hiatusit was really very exciting to be starting Shmuel again! To those of you who were new to the class -- hope you enjoyed! To those of you returning -- hope you enjoyed too! We spent this first shiur (and only this one shiur) contextualizing Sefer Shmuel and understanding it in a historical context. We reviewed Shmuel Bet 1-6 and had some good conversations.

Next week, please God we will start the 7th perek when David wants to build the Bet HaMikdash and finds out some disturbing news.

Have a great week!
