Brachot: An Introduction to Gemara

add this shiur

Course Description

In this course we will develop Talmud-learning skills through the study of the fourth chapter in Tractate Brachot. We will learn how to read the text with the help of the commentators to reach a better understanding of what the rabbis were trying to teach us.

We will begin by familiarizing ourselves with what the gemara IS and where it comes from and it’s place in our tradition. After that we will focus on building essential skills and Aramaic know-how to allow participants to eventually learn on their own.
If you’re a beginner who has always been intimidated by learning the Talmud, this is the class for you!

Brachot: First shur and a discussion about what Gemara is

Dear all

Thank you SO much for joining me this evening. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did! This evening we put the Gemara into historical context so as better be able to understand why we learn it and how to learn it. Pls God next week we approach the daf.

Additionally please find attached the sefer I mentioned in shiur- The Encyclopedia of the Scholars of the Talmud (which I don't believe has been translated). There is no need to purchase this book for shiur but it an outstanding resource

Please be in touch with any thoughts/comments or feedback!

Brachot: An Introduction to Gemara

Dear students

It was great learning with all of you again his evening! We finished the time line of the gemara and discussed Mishna and Tosefta and how it all gets codified and why - all to prepare us to better be able to lean gemara next week!!

Some resources discussed in shiur this evening:

  • Rabbi Binyamin Lau’s four-book series, The Sages.
  • Rabbi Berel Wein’s two books:  The Oral Law of Sinai (on the tannaim) and Vision and Valor (on the amoraim)
  • Mishnayot with Kehati (in English if needed)
  • Tosefta can be found on Sefaria (only in Hebrew) and the back of your Gemara if you have one

Thank you all so much for taking the time to learn with me! See you next week when we start learning the actual daf!

Brachot: An Introduction to Gemara 26a

Dear all

Not sure what happened there. Sorry I didn't get to say goodnight, but Webex booted me off :(

Oh well, at least we were done learning for the evening.

This evening we progressed to almost the end  of 26a, looking at the idea of how late one can daven. We established that the ideal time to pray is first light, but that one can daven until noon, Indeed, one can even daven later than noon, but they don't get the full reward. We then learned about tashlumim (make up) prayers, which we will review next week. Please feel free to review what we learned on your own before next week :)

Thanks for taking the time to learn!

Brachot: An Introduction to Gemara 26b

Hi all

I had a lot of fun with all of you this evening! We finished the sugya relating to when one can do a "make up" prayer, and how. We ended with a kashya: When is a kashya not a kashya?!Please think about it and bring any answers you may have next week!

We also got to start the next sugya that has the Ammoraim discussing why prayers were set in the times they were set, and by whom

Anyone who had any trouble following in the archives (or live) don't hesitate to email me your questions

Have a great rest of the week!

Brachot: An Introduction to Gemara

Dear Students

I had to cancel last week because I was sick and this Tuesday I had a program I had to be at when I normally give shiur. Rather than miss two weeks in a row I will be giving shiur this evening. For those of you  who can join me, great! And for those who can catch it in the archives also great!

Looking forward to seeing you this evening and then returning to our normal day next week
