Course Description

We will be learning Masechet Bava Kama this semester, beginning with the ninth chapter, HaGozel Eitzim.  We will cover the discussions of the gemara itself, as well as the comments of Rashi and Tosafot.
We will emphasize a methodological approach to studying gemara, aimed at equipping the student with the tools needed to learn gemara on one’s own.

Introduction: returning robbed/stolen items
To all new and returning students:
Welcome to our gemara shiur, "Reading the Rabbinic Mind".
I am excited to be starting a new semester of learning with all of you.

This semester we are continuing to learn Masechet Bava Kama, but moving forward to chapter 9, Perek HaGozel Eitzim.  The general subject here is the laws of returning objects that were stolen/robbed/taken by force, especially returning such objects after changes have occurred in them.

As in the past, our shiur will focus on understanding the detailed discussions of the gemara with the aim of assisting the student in acquiring skill in reading and understanding gemara text, as well as gaining acquaintance with concepts and types of argumentation. We will also use Rashi's commentary as the primary rishonim text, and we will often read comments of Tosafot that are on the page as well.

Our first shiur, this coming Tuesday April 24, will serve as an introduction to the subject of the chapter. We will look at verses, at selections from the Rambam's Mishneh Torah that will help us understand the relevant concepts, and finally learn the first few mishnayot of the chapter as our way of beginning the gemara study.

For your convenience, I am posting here the source texts for the first shiur.

Looking forward to seeing you in the class!

Yitzhak Zuriel
