The Gates of Divine Inspiration

Shalom and welcome to a new zman at webyeshiva.

Tonight we begin a series based on the teachings of the Arizal, collected from the Sefer, Sha'ar Ruach HaKodesh; Divine Inspiration.

We begin with a look at the Holy Letters of the Aleph Beit, how we interact with them and their relationship to our service in this world.  This includes how to attach oneself to the Letters, how we 'light the letters' , how they communicate in return to us, and what is the import of their communication.  Much of this material is rooted in the holy Sefer Yetzirah and will challenge our former conceptions of what constitutes the holy language, how we interact with it and how it interacts with us.  We will have to draw on what we have learned in the last three semesters from the Eight Gates and Jewish Mediation.  As in all Torah learning, as we expand our understanding, old ideas will be replaced by new ones, and perceptions will change according to what we merit to receive. I am very excited to learn these ideas together.

Look forward to seeing you there tonight.

The Gates of Divine Inspiration

Shalom.  Tomorrow night we continue our journey through what I find to be an amazing series of teachings from the Ari'zal.  The Rav, Rebbe Haim Vital reveals to us some of the secrets of Hashem's Name, the Human body and body language and sensitivity to smell, color, and even the behavior of animals towards us.  This material may seem outrageous to many but once we understand how the neshama moves through us, limb by limb, and other creatures that conform to this pattern, we can begin to perceive why nothing is taken for granted at these extremely sensitive levels of human perception.  Some will scoff, others will question, and this is itself a challenge to our faith that we must pass through in order to achieve a greater understanding of how God communicates to us through us and the world around us.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Always, Avraham

The Gates of Divine Inspiration

Shalom and welcome.  Tomorrow night the Rav will explain to us some of the more difficult aspects of understanding and obtaining divine inspiration.  This will include some rather arcane subjects such as the impact of bad smells on perception, confrontation with dead creatures and their effects on the Neshama, the power of joy, and the destructive forces of sadness, depression and anger.  When understood through the filter of Kabbalah, we see that teshuva is manifold and more profound than we expected or could have understood from the outset of our journeys.   The relationship between soul and emotion will be discussed, as will the ultimate kavanah that the Ari sets for all avodat Hashem, that is, unapologetically and unabashedly, our learning and mitzvot should be for the sake of obtaining ruach HaKodesh.  How that squares with 'l'shaim shamayim' will certainly demand our attention and examination.  Look forward to seeing you there.

The Gates of Divine Inspiration

Shalom and Welcome.

Tomorrow night the Ari'zal will introduce us to the learning of halacha with an understanding of how such effort produces the spark of Ruach Hakodesh; how our intention in the learning of halacha strips away the external forces that naturally hover over every divine law.  These difficultlies are naturally in us.  Each question of halacha is the darkness before the light of understanding.  Each answer or clarification of halacha releases a new spark of Da'as Torah into the mind of the learners, and the greater world as well.

The Rav will also speak of tevila, the mikveh, for the sake of our learning, and the further removal of the external forces that prevent us from seeing what our holy souls already see.  This level of mikveh is for men and women who are serious in their spiritual service and understand the value of these holy practices.  Look forward to seeing you there.

Shalom and Welcome.

Tonight the Ari'zal will take us through a long list of things to be careful about, especially someone whose soul is rooted in the original soul of Kayin, Cain, whose spiritual legacy has been less than complimentary, to say the least.  These 'warnings' are practices that many keep and represent another means of guarding the soul in order to experience transcendency.  Some of the teachings appear arcane, superstitious and might even cause some people to deride these teachings.  Only when we understand these practices in context of the Kabbalistic view of the soul and the transfers of energy from above and below, can we understand how these practices are derived and sustained.  Look forward to seeing you there.

The Gates of Divine Inspiration

Shalom and Welcome.  As promised tomorrow night we will continue into the realm described in last week's letter, the seemingly insignificant practices or prohibitions to souls from the root of Kayin, the leaving of salt on the table, the energy channels of the fingers, the beard, and the feet, and many more.  With a broad kabbalistic perspective all of these practices can be understood by any person who wishes to understand.  Naturally to experience the truth of these teachings, we must reach outside ourselves, at least a little.  And that is where faith in the tsadik begins.  Look forward to seeing you there.

Shalom and Welcome

Tonight we will look at some difficult questions, when faced with the prospect of how to repair ourselves in order to receive what our upper souls already perceive above.  The questions include how can we fix when we barely have the strength to fast, to perform sigufiim, to immerse in freezing waters, roll in snow, etc.  Few people are able, but the doors cannot be closed.  How do we proceed?  This question also touches the jewish people as the nation that brings redemption.  How can we bring redemption from such a level?  The Rav speaks of spiritual healing in the personal and national sense, as well as the realities of the Messianic Era.  I am thankful and grateful we have such teachers as Rebbe Chaim Vital, and the Ari Hakadosh.  Without their explanations, where would we turn?  Hopefully tonight we will find some answers.

Look forward to seeing you there.

February 22, 2018 9:00PM - 10:00PM
The Gates of Divine Inspiration

Shalom and Welcome.  Tomorrow night we return to the source book, the beginning of Sha'ar Ruach Hakodesh, that describes  some of the most essential understandings of how Hashem communicates through people.  We will look at the 'chain of command' of how a voice from heaven invests itself in this world, and how to tell what voices are true, which are false, and those partially so.  The Rav also explains how when a person's prophetic strength is weak, he can be helped by other zaddikim from the root of his soul, both from tzaddikim of his generation and those of the past.  We will also touch on the subtle differences between nuvuah and ruach hakodesh, their sources in time and the inumberable levels of these phenomena found in Tanach as well as  Torah sh-ba'al peh.  These last two weeks promise to open doors we did not know we had.  Look forward to seeing you there.

The Gates of Divine Inspiration

Shalom and Welcome.

Tomorrow night we will learn our last piece of SHa'ar Ruach Hakodesh,

of the Arizal, and try to clarify some of the points from last week's class.  The Rav will speak about the differences in the levels of the prophets, concerning the level of emanation of the revelation of several of our most famous zaddikim.  Along with this we will explore more in depth the distinctions between Voice, Speech and Breath, as the Rav explains them, with our eye on these levels as 'experiential and theorectical.'  To help our understanding we will also look at the First Day of the Seven Beggars of Rabbi Nachman which deals with Memory and the levels of the soul.  In other words, our ability to 'remember' the past is in direct relation to our level of soul comprehension.  When we experience the timelessness of our soul, then we can begin to better understand this story, and much of what we have learned so far this semester.

It's hard to believe we have reached the end.  The following week, we will begin our investigation of the Nature of MIracles, as a preparation for Pesach.

Look forward to seeing you there.
