Modern Chasidism is responsible for the elevation of the Nigun, the wordless melody, to special status that has gone well beyond its walls. What's behind the niggun and how is it understood as being essential to religious experience? Some Chasidic masters will explain the what and the why of the melody without words.

Daf 122b: Trunk and cabinet doors: How the Amoraim Read the Words of the Tanaim

In the previous shiur, we finished going through the mishnayot of chapter 17. Then we returned to the 1st Mishnah of the chapter, this time on the gemara page. After pointing out a small language issue with the first few words of the Mishnah and how Rashi and Tosefot deal with it, we read and translated the first 6 lines of gemara (up to the abbreviation “ת"ר”). We did not yet begin to analyze the logical construction of this small segment of gemara. Please review this material, and bring any questions you may have to shiur or write them to me by email. At the end of that shiur, I invited you to try to get a reading/understanding of this first chunk of gemara on your own before we do it in this shiur. This may very well not be easily doable for you at this stage. Don’t be frustrated, and if it is indeed challenging or you didn’t have time to try, I intend in this shiur to fully cover every word and make sure you are all with me.

So in this shiur, we will logically parse that first segment of gemara, and then discuss its meaning in more depth. We will discuss the two fundamental and general ways that amoraim in the gemara read/construct meaning from a halacha in Mishnah, and apply it in this situation to understand the words of Abaye. Following that, we will continue on to the next segment, which begins immediately afterwards with a beraita and concludes with the discussion of it between Abaye and Rava. Also on this piece we will employ the same methodology: read/translate/break into logical pieces/discuss in depth.

	Hello, dear students!

How did you celebrate Shavuot? I hope everything was just excelent!

After a week without classes, we are going to make a quick review of Yiddish numbers, negative sentences and plural.

After that, we are going to discuss the Imperative form of the verb, the unique feature of Yiddish diminutives (with a song), and if we have time, the past tense.

	Best Regards

Midrash Agnon: In the Prime of Her Life - Part 3

In the final session we will watch this Israeli film version of "In the Prime of Her Life": http://youtu.be/Q443K0Gzn1A and discuss the complexities of adapting Agnon for the stage or screen. Please consider which passages from the novella you anticipate would be really difficult to translate to the screen (and why). Email me with your thoughts to be considered for our prize competition.

We'll also discuss how "In the Prime of Her Life" resonates with other works in the Agnonian canon. Attached are selections from two later works - A Simple Story (1935) and A Guest for the Night (1939) - in which Agnon references the story of Tirza and Mazal. We discussed both of these works in this series on the novels.
