THE BRUCE RITHOLTZ TALMUD PROJECT: A new kind of Gemara shiur, dedicated to the memory of Bruce Ritholtz a”h. The class will undertake the ambitious goal of studying and completing an entire tractate of Talmud each year followed by a siyum to mark its completion at the time of Bruce's yahrtzeit, between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The class will be focused on a clear understanding of the text of the Gemara, together with in-depth explorations of selected topics followed by interactive dialogue through social media and email. This year we will be studying tractate Megilla. This class will be broadcast live from Lincoln Square Synagogue (LSS) in New York. LSS is a diverse and vibrant Modern Orthodox Congregation that provides religious, social, and educational services and outreach to the unique Jewish community of the Upper West Side. Microwave ovens raise a number of problems at home and in the work place: Can a microwave oven be used for both meat and milk? Can kosher food be heated in a non-kosher microwave oven in the work place? Can we permit food heated by a non-Jew in a microwave oven. Can a microwave oven be kashered for use on Passover?
We will survey the opinions of the great contemporary poskim on these and related issues.

Does Judaism believe in magic? If it exists can one practice it? What are the limits? In this course we will look at the halachot (laws), and we will also broaden the discussion to explore the dichotomy that exists between various Jewish philosophers. We will look at the the adherents of the Rambam who decry the entire subject as nonsense and the adherents of the Ramban who say that it is not nonsense but it an efficacious endeavor which the Torah happens to prohibit.
