The Seven Prophetesses of Israel

The Seven Prophetesses of Israel

Navi / Ketuvim (Bible: Prophets/Writings)
Mrs. Aviva Stern

The Talmud in Megilla 14a-b lists seven women and their prophecies (Sarah, Miriam, Devorah, Chana, Avigail, Chulda, and Esther). What did the rabbis have to say about these women? How can we understand them through the midrashic explanation in the gemara? What is added by reading their stories in the context on the Tanakh? By the end of this series, we will have a multifaceted appreciation for these seven women, both as individuals who achieved greatness, as well as leaders and role models for personal and national connection to God.

NEW! Inaugural Prophecies of Biblical Leaders (June 20 – July 11)

Navi / Ketuvim (Bible: Prophets/Writings)
Mrs. Aviva Stern

In this four-part series, we will learn about how four of our greatest prophets - Moshe, Shmuel, Yeshayahu and Yirmiyahu - first experienced God's revelation and became divine messengers. Through a close read of the text, we will analyze how each prophet started out on his journey, as well as how these inaugural prophecies shaped each ones prophetic "career". We will also gain insight into different models of prophecy and Jewish leadership by drawing comparisons between these four figures.
