Torah 101 at WebYeshiva is a new way to introduce yourself to the rich heritage of Jewish learning at a level and pace that's right for you. Designed for thinking adults who are interested in finding more meaning in their Judaism, Torah 101 at WebYeshiva uses advanced videoconferencing technology to enable you to learn with outstanding teachers from the ease and comfort of your own computer. Starting in September 2009, we’ll explore some of the fundamental ideas and concepts in Judaism such as the holidays, faith and belief, Jewish history, spirituality, and the written and oral traditions. The course will be team taught, with a new theme each month: September: The High Holidays Tuesday nights at 9 pm Eastern time, 6 pm Pacific time, with Rabbi Avi Weinstein The time leading up to the High Holidays - Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur - is traditionally a time for introspection and growth. While there are many customs and practices surrounding the holidays, there is a lot more to them than mere tradition, and in fact a lot of meaning to be found in them. Tune in for this series of classes and raise your High Holiday experience to a whole new level. October: The Spiritual Core of Judaism Tuesday nights at 9 pm Eastern time, 6 pm Pacific time, with Mr. Michael Levin Sometimes it can seem like traditional Judaism is so focused on the details that the "big picture" isn't always clear. In this series we'll focus on the "big picture" that many people who are interested in learning about traditional Judaism crave - the spiritual core of the religion that underlies all of the practices, studies, and beliefs. November: From the Torah to Real Life Sunday nights at 9 pm Eastern time, 6 pm Pacific time, with Rabbi Joshua Ross Want to know how to run your business better, whether to go in for elective surgery, or how to approach the neighbor who still hasn't returned your vacuum cleaner? It's all in the Torah -you just have to look deep enough. Though the sayings and principles in the Hebrew Bible can often seem archaic, they are, in fact very relevant to modern, daily living. Rabbis and sages have been expounding upon the Hebrew Bible for centuries using the oral and written traditions. In this class we'll look at the concepts of the Oral Torah and the Written Torah, try to gain a better understanding of how Jewish law and philosophy developed, and how the profound words of the holy books are actively in play in medical and technological advancements, economics, law, environmentalism, politics, relationships, travel, and just about any aspect of life you can think of.
