Az Yashir: The Song of the Sea

Az Yashir: The Song of the Sea

Az Yashir Moshe… and then Moshe sang…. When the Song of the Sea is sung in the synagogue the ba’al koreh, the reader, usually uses a different melody than the standard Torah notes. Join Rabbi Dr. Stuart Fischman and explore The Shira’s textual meaning and what it means to the Jewish People as a jubilant response to being saved once again by God, one last time, from the hands of Pharaoh and the Mitzrim.

Az Yashir: The Song of the Sea: Az Yashir: The Song of the Sea Event
Class description

Hello Everyone

After all the events of the Exodus, it was only after the splitting of the Red Sea that our ancestors sang to Hashem in thanks. The “Song of the Sea”- “Az Yashir” is what we will discuss in the next two classes.

Today we will discuss the song in general and then we will see an essay by Emmanuel Levinas in which he defends Judaism’s apparent violence (which come across in the words of Az Yashir) against the criticism made by Simone Weil.
