This was Berachot 2a-b. Sunday shiurim I have an hour, so we covered the whole daf, able to look at issues such as how we can say  Shema early, before the stars come out, and the meaning of beshokhbekha, when you lie down or are lying down.

Today was our first weekday, we did Berachot 3a-b, but only got halfway down on 3b (after the discussion of ruins, into the discussion of the different parts of the night). We noticed especially the issue of Hashem roaring and cooing/wailing over the destruction of the Bet HaMikdash, the idea Hashem can see Himself (as it were) “forced” to do that which Hashem then later bemoans.

IMPORTANT: Tomorrow, Tuesday Asarah Be-Tevet’s daf, is at 7AM, one daf for all.

Today’s Daf starts at a different time than usual, 7AM, and just one daf presentation (because of davening times for Asarah Be-Tevet). We’re going to start on Berakhot 3b, and do our best to finish all of Berakhot 4a-b, with issues of sleep or not, thinking well of ourselves (and modesty) and connecting geulah to tefillah

NOTE FROM AFTER: We got to the bottom of Berachot 4b, and tomorrow, I think we’ll be able to catch up to finish Daf 5 as the schedule has it. Working on pacing, I hope to improve at that.

Today should be an ordinary Wednesday schedule, a 6AM (NYC time) live presentation, and then a 715 AM live presentation, the latter one recorded. This daf, Berakhot 5a and b, takes up questions of Torah study and (together and separately) of suffering, how it can sometimes help us improve, and sometimes hinder us.

Today, we’ll finish Berakhot 5b, then move on to Berakhot 6a and  Berakhot 6b. It’s a lot of material and I’ll do my best. Particularly in the 6am shiur, we’ll have a challenge because it’s a Torah reading day. Working on it.

We’ll spend a lot of the day talking about the value of praying in shul and issues of wearing and caring for tefillin. Hope to see you!

Today, we’ll finish Berakhot 6b and move on to Berakhot 7a and Berakhot 7b. We’re in series of statements by various rabbis of the time of the Talmud, about the value of praying in shul and certainly not differentiating ourselves from the Jewish nation praying to Hashem, about the idea of Hashem’s anger, about theodicy, when bad things happen to good people, and about Avraham Avinu’s great contributions to the world.

Berakhot 8a and Berakhot 8b is the daf for Shabbat. I will be taping it ahead of time, and it’s a daf also about the importance of going to shul, being part of communal services, the value of kindness to others, and, at the bottom of Berakhot 8b, a return to technical legal issues about saying Shema.

Berakhot 9a and  Berakhot 9b bring to a close our aggadeta discussions; we start with a long discussion of night, its nature and parts, as part of our discussion of night time Shema, return a bit to Eliyahu on Mt. Carmel, and then move on to our second Mishnah, the time of saying Shema in the morning.

This is Berakhot 10a and Berakhot 10b, where we meet Beruriah, learn a bit about reading Tanakh, about the soul and its relationship to Hashem, Hizkiyahu’s deathly illness and the value of turning to Hashem for compassion even when all seems lost. And more.

Finishing up Berakhot 12b, with the Mishnah we say in the Haggadah about mentioning the Exodus at night, Berakhot 13a, ending the chapter with a bit about name changes, going on to the next chapter and issues of attention to mitzvot in general, saying Shema in other languages, on to Berakhot 13b, the many options for what parts of Shema require intention and attention.

Finishing Berakhot 13b, moving on to Berakhot 14a and Berakhot 14b, issues of when we may or may not interrupt our Shema, then taking us into various statements by tannaim, rabbis who knew how to recite Mishnah, as they ask questions of Torah scholars about Shema and prayer generally, the prohibition against socializing before morning davening, and another explanation for the order of Shema.

As for the daf itself, Berakhot 17a and Berakhot 17b finish up the prayers of rabbis after their formal prayer, their prayers on special occasions, their common sayings, showing them to us as giants of the spirit and of service/relationship to Hashem, in addition to their expertise at Jewish law. We close with a new chapter, issues of being an onen, how to conduct ourselves while involved in burying a close relative.
