Gid Hanashe in Halacha & Lore

Gid Hanashe in Halacha & Lore

The Torah tells us that because an angel touched Jacob’s thigh, seemingly injuring him, we do not eat the sciatic nerve, otherwise known as גיד הנשה/Gid hanasheh. Join Rabbi Dr. Stuart Fischman as he explores the sources of this prohibition, which is linked to one of the most mysterious events in the Torah.

Gid hanashe-גיד הנשה- is the sciatic nerve.  The prohibition against eating the sciatic nerve is based on a remarkable story in Sefer Breishit about Yakov Avinu wrestling a man/angel.

Today we  will discuss the halachot of this prohibition.

Hello Everyone,

Last week we discussed the Halachot of the גיד השנה. Today we will discuss the story of Yakov Avinu wrestling with an angel. The medieval commentators examined the issue of how a spiritual being (an angel) is not only seen by human senses but can actually wrestle and physically harm a hman being.

The Gemarah in masechet Chullin examines what lesson is taught to us by the story of the wrestling angel.

Rabbi Dr. Stuart Fischman graduated from Yeshiva University in 1980 and the dental school of Columbia University in 1985. In 1989 he began studying and teaching at Yeshivat Hamivtar and now studies and teaches at Yeshivat Machanaim in Efrat. He has rabbinic ordination from Rav Zalman Nechemia Goldberg.
