Reading the Rabbinic Mind: Sukkot Ch3

Reading the Rabbinic Mind: Sukkot Ch3

Join Rabbi Yitzhak Zuriel to learn Masechet Sukkot, chapter 3. We will cover the discussions of the gemara itself, as well as the comments of Rashi and Tosafot.
We will emphasize a methodological approach to studying gemara, aimed at equipping the student with the tools needed to learn gemara on one’s own.

Welcome back to the students who have been participating in my class in the past, and are participating now in the testing period for the new WebYeshiva website!

For this testing period, we will be continuing where we stopped previously, in chapter 3 of Masechet Sukka, Perek “Lulav HaGazul”, starting with the new mishna about the Arava.

When the testing period is over and WebYeshiva launches officially in its new virtual home, we will stay in Masechet Sukka but move to the first chapter and start from the beginning.

I look forward to continuing with you!

In the last shiur, we continued in the first part of the sugya on the mishna about Arava (Daf 33b), and read the Rashi comments including the first part of Rashi’s comment on R.Yohanan’s list of 3 halachot/mitzvot that are Halacha le-Moshe mi-Sinai.

In this shiur, we will finish learning the second part of that long Rashi, which explains the item “‘eser neti’ot“, then we will continue on in the gemara, which deals with the exclusion of tzaftzafa as brought in the mishna.

In the previous shiur, we read the extensive comments by Rashi explaining the meimra of R.Yohanan that lists 3 halachot that are halacha le-Moshe mi-Sinai. At the very end of the shiur, we read the next (the 3rd) baraita quoted by the gemara that deals with identifying the tree branch that fulfills the requirements of the Torah to be considered a branch of Arava. This baraita explains how the tree called tzaftzafa is excluded by the pasuk.

In this shiur, we will continue with the gemara’s discussion of this baraita and learn more about the differences between tzaftzafa and arava.
